Sources: Players unconcerned, but Hawks may have made error when filing offers

It appears the Chicago Blackhawks' restricted free agents aren't worried about their contract status, a source close to the situation told TFP.

However, that doesn't mean the paperwork was filed correctly.

On Friday night, TSN reported that the NHL and the NHLPA are investigating whether the Blackhawks properly filed qualifying offers to their RFAs.

According to the report, Chicago RFA players failed to receive the necessary notification of the offers.

Kris Versteeg, Cam Barker, Ben Eager, Colin Fraser, Aaron Johnson and Troy Brouwer are among the players mentioned.

TFP has learned that the paperwork was properly filed with both the NHL and the Player's Association, however as part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the player's agents must also be notified within the allotted timeframe.

According to one source, some the Blackhawks' restricted free agents were contacted about the situation and had they had indicated they knew their qualifying offers were submitted to the league and the NHLPA.

"In fact, they're excited about [getting a new deal done and] hitting the ice next season," the source said.

While the players may not anticipate any potential issues concerning their position with the team, their present contractual status may be hindered.

Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon told TSN the qualifying offers were mailed on June 29, but due to there being a national holiday in Canada on July 1, some players did not receive their offers in time.

As per information obtained by TFP late last night, at least one player and his agent had not received the proper documentation as of yesterday.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly told TFP Editor-in-Chief David Pagnotta via email early Saturday afternoon that "the NHLPA has asked us to look into it, and we expect to get them infomation this afternoon."

The NHL and the Player's Association are trying to determine if any specific deadlines were missed, as per the CBA.
