Could Flames buy out Wideman?
TheFourthPeriod.com

The Flames plan on being fairly active this off-season, and one move they could make is buying out defenseman Dennis Wideman's contract, suggested the Calgary Herald last week.

While the Herald noted that buying out Wideman's $5.25 million annual salary would be costly, it remains an option for Flames President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke.

Wideman, 31, signed his five-year deal with the Flames on June 27, 2012, after his rights were acquired from the Washington Capitals.

In just 46 games with the Flames this season, due to a broken hand and an upper body injury, Wideman registered four goals and 17 assists for 21 points, along with a minus-15 rating.

As Burke remains on the hunt for a new General Manager, he will oversee the team's off-season activity, including whether or not to buy out Wideman.

The Flames will continue their attempts to re-sign veteran forward Michael Cammalleri, though a source close to the situation told TFP that Cammalleri is likely set on testing the unrestricted free agent market July 1.
