Cammalleri stays, unlikely to re-sign

The Calgary Flames opted against trading Mike Cammalleri prior to Wednesday's trade deadline, as Brian Burke did not want to part with him for a low price.

Burke, the Flames' President of Hockey Operations, had received multiple offers for Cammalleri, but decided to hold on to him.

The Flames had pitched Cammalleri a multi-year contract offer, which he turned down, and are expected to continue to try to sign him to an extension.

However, TFP has learned that Cammalleri was indeed welcoming a change of scenery and is now expected to test the waters as an unrestricted free agent July 1.

The Columbus Blue Jackets, Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, Anaheim Ducks and Pittsburgh Penguins, among others, expressed an interest in Cammalleri, but the offers did not exceed a third-round draft pick.

"I'd rather take a chance on keeping him here and signing him than giving him away on a terrible deal," Burke said in his post-deadline press conference.

Burke indicated that he felt the market was focused on players like Thomas Vanek and Matt Moulson, and having them dealt so close to the deadline factored into why Cammalleri wasn't moved.
