Flames trade for Wideman, sign Comeau TheFourthPeriod.com
As TFP first reported, the Calgary Flames acquired defenseman Dennis Wideman from the Washington Capitals and signed him to a five-year, $26.25 million contract.
In exchange for Wideman, the Flames gave up minor-league defenseman Jordan Henry and a fifth-round pick in the 2013 NHL draft.
Wideman, 29, will earn an annual cap hit of $5.25 million. The veteran blueliner would have become an unrestricted free agent on Sunday.
In 82 games with the Caps this past season, Wideman collected 11 goals and a team-high 35 assists for 46 points.
Meanwhile, the Flames also announced the signing of forward Blake Comeau, who signed a one-year, $1.25 million deal instead of testing the open market on Sunday.
In 58 games with the Flames, he posted five goals and 10 assists for 15 points.
