Craig Conroy went up to bat for him, but it wasn't enough as the Calgary Flames announced today that they have fired head coach Mike Keenan.

"Our team did not meet expectations," said Flames GM Darryl Sutter. "Following detailed evaluation over the past three weeks, and taking into consideration all factors affecting our season ending result, we believe this is a necessary change required to allow our team to continue toward our objective of winning the Stanley Cup.

"The Calgary Flames organization appreciates and respects Mike for accepting the opportunity to come to Calgary and are thankful for his efforts over the past two years."

Keenan was named Calgary's head coach on June 14, 2007. In two seasons with the club, Keenan posted an 88-60-16 record, but the Flames were bounced from the first-round of the playoffs in both years.

The remaining members of the Flames' coaching staff are subject to further review and evaluation.
