Blue Jackets to trade Umberger
TheFourthPeriod.com

As the Blue Jackets look to strengthen their roster for the 2014-15 season, one of their current veteran stars isn't likely to be back in the mix this fall.

According to Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch, Blue Jackets forward R.J. Umberger has requested to be traded and the team will attempt to accommodate him.

Umberger and Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen both declined to comment on the situation, when contacted by the Dispatch.

The 32-year-old has three-years left on his five-year, $23 million deal. He's due $4.5 million per season in salary, though his cap hit is $4.6 million.

As per the Dispatch, Umberger's current no-trade clause turns into a limited no-trade clause on June 15, upon which the Pittsburgh native can provide a list of 10 teams he will not accept a trade to.

The Blue Jackets will be looking to improve their club for next season, and are expected to go after a top-six forward. Kekalainen may look to package Umberger in a larger deal for an offensive-minded winger.

The Dispatch suggests that Umberger's lack of playing time and being scratched near the end of the season may have factored into his decision for demanding a trade.
