Columbus GM looking for center

The Columbus Blue Jackets are heading into the trade deadline with a mission, to acquire a center before March 4.

Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson was on Hockeycentral at Noon on Toronto's Fan590 sports radio station today and confirmed his team's interest in trying to acquire a center.

"We will be trying to add," he said. "We think we need a center. Not necessarily a top-end center, but a center that can help and play at least 15 minutes a night and be responsible both ways. That's sort of what we're targeting."

Howson acknowledged that "there's really nothing imminent for us," but did indicate that he's a buyer heading into the deadline.

"We've targeted some of the players of interest," he said.

"I don't know if we're going to be successful. You don't know what the costs are going to be. I think the costs are not determined yet, and those things usually get finalized when people are pushed towards the deadline."

The Blue Jackets are not planning on trading away any of its young talent, but they'd consider bringing on a player who's locked up to a multi-year deal.

From the Editor: Howson and Co. are looking around quite a bit and they're likely to get this hands on center. I doubt they can acquire a top-line guy, even though they're interested in someone like Olli Jokinen, but they've also been eyeing Vaclav Prospal out of Tampa and Nik Antropov out of Toronto, and those are two guys they could try to get. -- David Pagnotta.
