Norrena heading for Russia

Blue Jackets goalie Fredrik Norrena said goodbye to his teammates yesterday after clearing unconditional waivers, reports the Columbus Dispatch.

Norrena, who lost his job to rookie Steve Mason, had his contract terminated by the team and is expected to sign with a team in Russia's KHL as early as today.

"You could see it coming," Norrena told the Dispatch. "It wasn't a huge surprise. When you have family, it's much tougher. So many people are involved. That's maybe the hardest part of this."

Norrena also told he paper he has two offers from KHL clubs. He'll likely finish his career in Europe.

Norrena was placed on waivers last week and cleared, upon which the Blue Jackets asked if he'd spend some time in the AHL. He refused, and the team let him go.

"I just felt I didn't have a future here," Norrena said. "That's the only reason. My going down three games to Syracuse it didn't feel right."

From the Editor: These things happen in pro sports. Luckily for Norrena, he has another big league to go to and play with. Norrena's a great guy, but things didn't work out. He'll finish up his playing career in Europe and might even play a little longer. -- David Pagnotta
