Cam Ward, Anton Khudobin and Justin Peters have been splitting time between the pipes, primarily due to injuries, but one of them is expected to be moved by March 5.
Ward is expected to play a couple of games in the AHL "to get his timing," Rutherford told Sportsnet, then he will determine what the next steps are.
"There's enough interest in any one of the three," Rutherford confirmed.
"I think the real question is, do we carry three or do we make a move and move one? The biggest thing for me is if we move one, it makes it better for two goalies. With three goalies, they just don't get enough practice time, they don't get their own net. That's a decision we're going to have to make prior to the deadline."
Sources have confirmed to TFP that Ward, who has a no-trade clause, would be open to a change of scenery.
Ward, 29, has two-years left on his contract beyond this season. He would have to approve any deal the team tries to make, but there is believed to be considerable interest in him.
Khudobin and Peters are in the final year of their respective contracts and can become unrestricted free agents July 1.
It's believed the Hurricanes would like to sign Khudobin to an extension, which would further speculation that Ward could be on the move, if Khudobin inks a new deal.
