On Dec. 30, the Hurricanes traded forward Kevin Westgarth to the Calgary Flames for prospect Greg Nemisz, and two days later shipped defenseman Tim Gleason to the Toronto Maple Leafs for blueliner John-Michael Liles and prospect Dennis Robertson.
The Hurricanes wanted a mobile defenseman and got that in Liles, and now Rutherford wants to address his forward corps.
Forwards Tuomo Ruutu and Jiri Tlusty are being shopped around the NHL, while a number of teams, including the Leafs, have inquired about young star Jeff Skinner.
While Ruutu and Tlusty could be moved -- Ruutu has a no-movement clause and would have to approve any deal the team tries to make -- Skinner's price tag has jumped since he turned on the jets playing on Eric Staal's left wing.
Rutherford wants to add a top-six winger well before the March 5 trade deadline to help his team's playoff hopes.
The Hurricanes have won three straight and currently sit three points behind the Washington Capitals for third in the Metropolitan Division and four points behind the Leafs for the final wild card playoff spot.
