The Carolina Hurricanes have signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Anton Babchuk to a one-year, $1.4 million contract.

Babchuk, 26, spent the 2009-10 season in the Kontinental Hockey League, skating in 49 games with Avangard Omsk. He spent the previous few seasons in Carolina.

"We're happy to be bringing Anton back to the Hurricanes," said Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford. "His has a big shot and he really came into his own offensively for us during the 2008-09 season. He will be an important contributor to our success next season."

Babchuk was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round (21st overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, and has accumulated 23 goals and 38 assists in 168 career NHL games with Chicago and Carolina.
