Brind'Amour melting away in Raleigh?

After being scratched from last night's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Raleigh News & Observer suggests center Rod Brind'Amour's tenure in Carolina could be coming to an end.

Brind'Amour, currently a league-worst minus-19, has one-year remaining on his contract beyond this season.

Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford told the News & Observer today that Brind'Amour's ice time would be decided on a game-by-game basis. Rutherford also indicated that no major decisions regarding the team's captain have been made.

"There have been no discussions on any change in his status," Rutherford said. "When a player like Rod is not in the lineup, it's an issue and people talk about it, but we will take it one game, one week at a time."

In 28 games so far this season, Brind'Amour has tallied two goals and six assists. According to various local reports, Brind'Amour and some of his teammates were very upset of the benching.

Brind'Amour's future with the Hurricanes is certainly in question. Rutherford has been actively shopping a number of his veteran players, such as Scott Walker and Aaron Ward, but it's so far uncertain if Brind'Amour is also on the trade block.

"I have known Rod for a long time and have a lot of respect for him," Rutherford said. "I do not know where this is going."
