With Cam Ward battling a left leg injury and the Hurricanes sitting last in the Eastern Conference, Carolina GM Jim Rutherford is actively looking to upgrade his roster.
Ward, who suffered a laceration of the left leg in the first period of Saturday's loss to Columbus, will miss an undisclosed period of time.
Rutherford told the Raleigh News & Observer he may try to trade or sign another goaltender.
The Ottawa Sun, meanwhile, reports the Hurricanes are willing to trade Ray Whitney and Joe Corvo.
Whitney, however, has a no-movement clause and it's unlikely such a move will be made.
The Sun also hints the Hurricanes could make a change on the bench, having Ron Francis step in for Paul Maurice.

The last time the Hurricanes fired Maurice, I was told the day prior that his job was safe... so, I really don't know what the Hurricanes will do with Maurice, but it's difficult to coach a team when everyone's off their game. While I haven't heard any imminent coaching change, I do know Rutherford is trying to make a move or two. The injury to Ward definitely hurts Carolina's position and alters Rutherford's search. It will be an interesting next few days in Raleigh. -- David Pagnotta
