Cole, LaRose to test the free agent market

Hurricanes forwards Erik Cole and Chad LaRose will be fielding offers from other teams on the free agent market today, the Raleigh News & Observer reports.

Cole and LaRose had hoped to get a new contract locked up with Carolina before July 1, but it appears their asking price is too high.

The Hurricanes offered Cole a two-year contract worth less than the $4 million he made this past season.

"We know it's less than what his last contract was, but we've done it for reasons," Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford told the News & Observer. "There were the inconsistencies [in Cole's play], the playoff performance without him scoring a goal. He understands why."

Cole will gauge his value on the market, but still hopes to re-sign with the Hurricanes.

LaRose was offered a three-year deal, which is the length he wanted, but the dollar figures appears to be far from what he's looking for.

"They have not made an offer that would make Chad say, 'OK, let's stay on board,' " LaRose's agent, Pat Morris, told the paper. "He likes Carolina. He wants to stay. But the CBA [collective bargaining agreement] allows him to see how others feel about him."
