Sabres talking to Avs about No. 1 pick

The Buffalo Sabres have had conversations with the Colorado Avalanche about the first-overall pick in this month's NHL Draft.

While it's still unclear if the Avs are willing to trade the pick, the Sabres are knocking on their door, as they have two first-round picks to move.

"I believe (the Colorado Avalanche) is having internal meetings this week and we'll probably get back to them at some point," Sabres Director of Amateur Scouting Kevin Devine told Buffalo sports radio station WGR550. "We're waiting for a call back to find out what their position is."

The Sabres own the eighth-overall and 16th overall picks in the Draft, but the Avs will likely want a young talent as part of a package in return.

"We've had conversations with a lot of teams, including Colorado," Devine confirmed. "I do think there'll be some movement in those picks."

Devine added that the Sabres are interest in both Seth Jones and Nate MacKinnon, and value one more than the other, but "I really don't want to say" which one it is.
