The Buffalo Sabres have acquired veteran defenseman Craig Rivet and a seventh-round pick in 2010 from the San Jose Sharks for a second-round draft pick in 2009 and 2010.

Rivet, 33, appeared in 74 games with San Jose last season, picking up 35 points and 104 penalty minutes.

"We are very excited to add such a quality veteran player to our roster," said Regier. "He is a great character player that will provide our club added leadership and experience."

The North Bay, Ontario native has appeared in 744 NHL games and has amassed 194 points on 45 goals and 149 assists.

Rivet was the Montreal Canadiens' third-round choice (68th overall) in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft.
