Bruins won't re-sign Thornton
TheFourthPeriod.com

The Boston Bruins have informed veteran forward Shawn Thornton that he will not be brought back next season.

Thornton, 36, is set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

"Today I met with Shawn and we had a good meeting, and I informed him that we wouldn't be re-signing him," Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli told the team's website.

"It was good in the sense that we talked about the time Shawn has spent here, and he came here and we were talking about it - seven years - so he was here from almost the beginning and I told him that he was one of the most significant acquisitions we made because, one, for the role that he played, two, for the person that he is."

Thornton, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, was originally drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the seventh-round (190th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.

The Bruins appear to be focused on trying to re-sign pending unrestricted free agent right wing Jarome Iginla.
