Bruins out of Kovalchuk race?
TheFourthPeriod.com

The Bruins may be interested in Ilya Kovalchuk, but the Boston Herald reports they are not among the league's most aggressive bidders.

Kovalchuk, 26, is in the final year of his contract and can become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

Atlanta Thrashers GM Don Waddell notified his captain yesterday morning following the team's practice that he will be trading him in the near future.

Citing an unnamed source, the Herald claims the Bruins are still interested in Kovalchuk, but their offer for him is not "not the top."

The Thrashers are supposedly looking for three roster players in exchange for Kovalchuk, which could change depending on the kind of prospects/draft picks that are added to the mix.

The Bruins are unlikely to draft away the first-round pick acquired from Toronto, which is slated, as of now, to be a lottery pick, but the Herald suggests the team could deal it's own first-round selection as part of a package.

Meanwhile, according to several reports, the Bruins are believed to be trying to trade right wing Michael Ryder.

I wouldn't count the Bruins out of the race just yet, but it doesn't appear as if their offers have been the strongest. Atlanta seems set on trading Kovalchuk before tomorrow evening, but that doesn't mean they've set a hard deadline. If the right offer isn't there, they could sit Kovalchuk at the risk of him getting injured in a game. -- David Pagnotta
