Despite an online report yesterday, the Bruins are not close to signing center Marc Savard to a long-term contract extension, reports the Boston Globe.
Yesterday, RDS.ca reported that the Bruins were set to sign Savard to a seven-year, $39 million deal.
Citing sources close to negotiations, the Globe claims a new contract is not imminent and the overall payout on a deal is not expected to be as high.
It's believed talks between the Bruins and Savard's agent have been positive and a deal could be finalized before the end of the month.
Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli would like to get a deal done and seems poised to sign Savard to a seven-year contract with an annual cap hit closer to $5 million.

Talks were hot and heavy during the summer and cooled after the season started. Negotiations picked up lately, and by the sounds of things, both parties want a deal ironed out by Thanksgiving (U.S. style). The Bruins know they'll have to pay up large for Savard, so spreading the cash over a long-termed contract makes sense and helps them out, cap wise. -- David Pagnotta
