Bruins trade Kobasew to Wild

The Boston Bruins have traded right wing Chuck Kobasew to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for right wing Craig Weller, a 2011 second-round draft choice and the rights to right wing Alexander Fallstrom.

Kobasew, 27, recorded one assist in seven games with the Bruins this season.

In 368 career NHL games with the Calgary Flames an Bruins, Kobasew has accumulated 78 goals and 77 assists for 155 points, as well as 272 penalty minutes. He was originally drafted 14th overall by the Flames in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Weller, a fifth-round selection of the St. Louis Blues in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft (167th overall), has played in 95 NHL games with the Phoenix Coyotes and Wild and tallid four goals, 10 assists and 127 penalty minutes.

Fallstrom, a native of Gothenburg, Sweden, was originally selected in the fourth-round (116th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by Minnesota.

Kobasew is signed through the 2010-11 season and has a cap hit of $2.333 million per year. Could this move Boston has made have anything to do with trying to sign center Marc Savard to a long-term contract extension? Makes ya think, doesn't it? --David Pagnotta
