Bruins trade Kessel to Maple Leafs

Unable to come to terms on a new contract that would fit under the Bruins' salary cap, Phil Kessel has finally been traded.

Kessel, 21, is off to the Toronto Maple Leafs, while a 2010 and 2011 first-round pick and a 2010 second-round draft pick head to Boston.

Soon after the trade was completed, Kessel signed a five-year, $27 million contract with the Leafs.

"Phil's a dynamic player," said Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke. "It's an important day for the Leafs, and we're very pleased that Phil Kessel's coming to Toronto."

Last season, Kessel scored a career-high 36 goals with the Bruins, which tied him for 12th in the NHL.

Drafted fifth-overall by the Bruins in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Kessel has accumulated 66 goals and 60 assists for 126 points in 222 career NHL games.

Kessel is recovering from shoulder surgery and won't be ready to play until well after the season begins.

I'm a little surprised the Bruins dealt Kessel within their division, but they seem to have picked up a great package. Kessel is the type of player the Maple Leafs really like and he's a building block for a growing team. -- David Pagnotta
