P.J. Axelsson has spent his entire 11-year NHL career with the Bruins, but the Boston Globe reports he'll now finish his playing career in his native Sweden.
Axelsson, 34, signed a four-year contract yesterday with Frolunda, his former Swedish Elite League club.
"When you look at Bruins history, the classic Bruins, it's lunchpail hockey," Neil Abbott, Axelsson's agent," told the Globe. "P.J. was a Bruin through and through, true to the core. With his hard work and determination, he gave it his all. I never saw any client work harder and have more fun doing it than P.J. He loved wearing that jersey."
Axelsson was originally drafted in the seventh-round by the Bruins in 1995 and went on to play in 797 career NHL regular-season games.
Abbott confirmed to the Globe that he had received several offers for his client, including a few three-year deals, but those were contingent on the club clearing cap space.
With depth at the left wing position, the Bruins never pitched Axelsson an offer of their own.
"He's sad to be leaving Boston. No question," Abbott said. "He's been here for a long time, his whole career. He's very appreciative of the Boston fans and sends his thanks."
