Bruins sign free agent Morris

After freeing up some salary cap space earlier in the day, the Boston Bruins have signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Derek Morris to a one-year, $3.3 million contract.

Earlier today, the Bruins dealt defenseman Aaron Ward to the Carolina Hurricanes for forward Patrick Eaves, whom they've placed on waivers for the purpose of buying him out, and a fourth-round draft pick.

Morris, who turns 31 on Aug. 24, registered five goals and 15 assists last season with the Phoenix Coyotes and New York Rangers while earning $3.95 million.

The Edmonton native was originally drafted 13th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
