Thrashers want to re-sign Kubina, Armstrong

While nothing appears to be imminent, the Thrashers want to get defenseman Pavel Kubina and forward Colby Armstrong signed to new contracts.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Thrashers GM Don Waddell is trying to get both players inked to extensions.
"During the Olympic break, I did talk to Kubina and Armstrong," Waddell told the paper. "There was nothing that was pressing to get a deal done. With the schedule that we have going, I don't want any distractions for these players. If we get into April and it's gone one way or another, then maybe we can re-visit it. It's just another month. They can't go somewhere else in the next month. Sometimes if the player is more anxious, the agent will be more diligent. In this case I've talked to both guys and they are fine."
Kubina and Armstrong are in the final year of their contracts and can become unrestricted free agents July 1.
Waddell also indicated that the team will not make any coaching changes this season and John Anderson's role with the club will be re-evaluated in the off-season.

It wouldn't surprise me if Kubina and Armstrong decide to test the waters this summer as UFAs, simply because of the value that comes along with them on the open market. The Thrashers will be retooling this summer. With a strong group of young talent, they'll need strong veterans to compliment them. -- David Pagnotta
