Thrashers, Kovalchuk to talk contract

TheFourthPeriod.com

The Thrashers are trying to significantly improve their roster for the 2009-10 season and got things started yesterday with the acquisition of defenseman Pavel Kubina.

Adding Kubina bolsters the team's defense, but the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the team is also trying to sign a top-six free agent forward.

"We haven't had any hard discussions, but we are tracking some players," Thrashers GM Don Waddell told the paper.

Waddell indicated that there's a 75-percent chance he signs a forward, and sources tell TFP the Thrashers have been eyeing free agents Nik Antropov and Alex Tanguay.

Another option for Waddell, should he fail to sign a free agent, is the trade route.

Meanwhile, the Thrashers are expected to speak with Ilya Kovalchuk and his agent later this month about a contract extension.

While a new deal is not expected to be agreed upon during the summer, the Thrashers are hoping they can prove to Kovalchuk that they are moving in the right direction.

"His agent and I will get together in the middle of July," Waddell said. "Nothing is going to happen for a little while."

From the Editor: Kubina was a great pick-up for Atlanta; they've had their eyes on him for a while. As for Kovalchuk, he's likely to wait and see how the team performs during the season before agreeing to anything. -- David Pagnotta.
