Waddell not yet asked to step down TheFourthPeriod.com
It has been widely reported that Don Waddell would be asked to step aside as Thrashers GM, however the Atlanta Journal-Constitution claims that's not the case.
Atlanta Spirit co-owner Michael Gearon Jr. told the paper that Waddell hasn't asked to step down – yet.
"The rumors that Don Waddell has been asked to step down are completely false," Gearon said in an e-mail to the Journal-Constitution. "Ever since the president position opened up in January, people have speculated that Don would be a fit in that position. That is a testament to his talent and potential beyond just the GM role. Don is very highly respected in Atlanta, in NHL circles, and certainly among our ownership group."
Gearon, however, would not say with complete certainty that Waddell will be back next season as the club's GM.
It's believed the Thrashers will appoint Waddell their new team president and search for a new GM. The Globe and Mail reported on Friday that the Thrashers were interested in speaking with former Vancouver Canucks GM Dave Nonis about taking over as GM.
According to the Journal-Constitution, Waddell has recently moved into former Atlanta Spirit president Bernie Mullin's office, fueling speculation that Waddell's future may be as president, not GM.
