Ducks to shift focus elsewhere

With defenseman Dan Girardi signing a six-year contract extension with the New York Rangers on Friday afternoon, the Anaheim Ducks will have to look elsewhere for help on the blueline.

The Ducks were among the teams seriously interested in Girardi, who could have been traded if he didn't sign an extension.

Ducks GM Bob Murray is scouring the market for a reliable rearguard, and has also expressed interest in other players around the league.

It is believed the Ducks are eyeing New York Islanders defenseman Andrew MacDonald, Ottawa Senators veteran Chris Phillips, Buffalo Sabres blueliners Henrik Tallinder and Christian Ehrhoff, and Florida Panthers pending restricted free agent Dmitry Kulikov.

The Ducks are also in the market for some depth up front, and could try to acquire a scoring winger for their second or third line.

Murray has kicked the tires on the Islanders' Thomas Vanek, Calgary Flames right wing Lee Stempniak and Buffalo Sabres left wing Matt Moulson.
