Contract negotiations have started between the Ottawa Senators and winger Claude Giroux, according to TFP’s David Pagnotta.
Giroux, 37, will see his three-year, $19.5 million contract expire on June 30 and is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
Both the Senators and Giroux have expressed interest in keeping their relationship going and as Pagnotta reported, contract talks are now underway, though there is still work to be done.
Though a short-term contract is expected, it is unclear as to the type of deal Giroux is looking for. He will, however, surely see his $6.5 million average annual value decrease on his next deal and that may hover around the $4 million range.
With just over $17.5 million in salary cap space going into the 2025-26 campaign, Senators GM Steve Staios does have the ability to add a few pieces to his roster, in addition to signing Giroux and the club’s top restricted free agents to new contracts.
In 81 games with the Senators this season, Giroux registered 15 goals and 35 assists for 50 points.
