The 20 'Best of the Rest' Unrestricted Free Agents
As of August 23, 2014 :: 3:50pm ET

With the NHL Free Agent market dwindling, almost everyone from TFP's Top 30 UFA List has been locked into a new contract in the first 48 hours. We now focus on the 20 'Best of the Rest' unrestricted free agents rumored to be attracting the most interest, with information collected from various newspaper, radio and television reports, cyberspace and our own league-wide sources. They are not ranked solely on their skill levels.

This page will be updated frequently, every day, as teams may be added and/or removed based on how everything plays out.

Teams Reportedly Showing Interest Status
Steve Ott, C/RW
2013-14 Cap Hit: $2.95 million | Age: 31

It's unclear if Ott will stay in St. Louis or look to sign closer to his home in Windsor, Ontario.

He's a great piece for a Cup contender's third line, and his energy and leadership qualities are a strong asset for any club.

Dustin Penner, LW
2013-14 Cap Hit: $2 million | Age: 31

Penner's big-body presence and solid performance with the Ducks (not so much the Capitals) will be a solid addition to any contender. He isn't an expensive option, but one who could provide solid depth for a top team in need of extra fire power.

Free Agent
Derek Roy, C
2013-14 Cap Hit: $4 million | Age: 31

Derek Roy's season in St. Louis wasn't extraordinary, and will likely result in a pay cut this off-season. He has struggled the past couple of seasons and may need to prove his worth this summer on a one-year deal.

David Legwand, C
2013-14 Cap Hit: $4.5 million | Age: 33

Legwand is no longer a top-six center and will have to take on third-line duties, wherever he ends up.

He'll likely find himself in the $2 million, per year, range, on a contender, but Detroit is out of the picture.

Martin Brodeur, G
2013-14 Cap Hit: $4.5 million | Age: 42

The Brodeur Era in New Jersey is over. He'll sign elsewhere this off-season and take on the role of a backup.

His priority is to join a Stanley Cup contender, but he'll let his agent handle the dealings, though he's willing to speak with clubs, personally.

Free Agent
Mike Ribeiro, C
2013-14 Cap Hit: $3 million | Age: 30

Ribeiro's troubles off the ice were what led to the Coyotes buying out his contract. While he should be among the Top 30 UFAs, he's currently seeking help for his off-ice issues, and it's unclear what the level of interest is from other clubs around the league. We're sure he'll wind up signing with a new deal in the near future.

Michael Del Zotto, D
2013-14 Cap Hit: $2.55 million | Age: 24

Del Zotto became an unrestricted free agent after the Nashville Predators failed to offer him a qualifying offer. Several teams have shown interest in the 24-year-old who still has plenty of upside, but it will all come down to what type of contract the former first-round pick is willing to take. Might be best to go short-term and prove himself all over again.

Lee Stempniak, RW
2013-14 Cap Hit: $2.5 million | Age: 31

There is plenty of interest in Stempniak, a player who provides depth scoring to any club in need of it. As we've seen with the Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings over the last four years, if you can roll three solid, productive lines, you've got a great chance at competing for the Stanley Cup.

Devin Setoguchi, RW
2013-14 Cap Hit: $3 million | Age: 27

Setoguchi's young career has dipped in the last few seasons, but he still boasts offensive upside. At just 27, the former 30-goal scorer has a lot of upside and needs to prove he can get back to that level. Jumping on in a complimentary role is likely in the cards for Setoguchi this off-season.

Jamie McBain, D
2013-14 Cap Hit: $1.8 million | Age: 26

Much like Del Zotto, McBain must rejuvenate his young career and prove he can be a second-pairing defenseman in the NHL.

Even though he's only 26, McBain may have to take a one-year contract and have a bounce-back season before cashing in next summer.

Free Agent
Daniel Winnik, LW
2013-14 Cap Hit: $1.8 million | Age: 29

Winnik posted a career-high 24 assists and 30 points with the Ducks last season, and his two-way style should help teams in need to adding quality to their bottom-six.

He's coming off a two-year contract with Anaheim, but might have to take a one-year deal this summer.

Michal Handzus, C
2013-14 Cap Hit: $1 million | Age: 37

Handzus proved his worth in the playoffs with the Blackhawks this past season and wants to give it one more shot at a second Stanley Cup championship.

His legs are far from what they use to be -- he was never fast to begin with -- but playing Handzus on the third or fourth line could benefit some contenders.

Free Agent
Tomas Vokoun, G
2013-14 Cap Hit: $2 million | Age: 38

Vokoun plans on playing in the NHL next season and there are a handful of teams interested in giving him a shot. He'll take a one-year contract in a backup role and teams in need of a veteran presence between the pipes to play roughly 25 games will be calling.

Free Agent
Dany Heatley, LW
2013-14 Cap Hit: $7.5 million | Age: 33

Heatley isn't the go-to guy anymore, but he should be motivated enough to pot in 20 next season in a depth role.

Contenders will take a chance on Heater if he's willing to sign a small contract and aim to recharge his career.

David Booth, LW
2013-14 Cap Hit: $4.25 million | Age: 29

Booth's fortunate he's only 29, or some teams might not give him a second look.

There's no doubt he's faltered of late, and while injuries have played a factor, he needs to rebound next season. He'll likely receive a one-year deal at a serious discount.

Daniel Alfredsson, RW
2013-14 Cap Hit: $5.5 million | Age: 41

If Alfredsson comes back, it'll be with Detroit. The Red Wings are still waiting to see if he wants in, otherwise they'll shift their focus elsewhere. That also means Alfredsson will likely retire. Right now, it's all up in the air.

Free Agent
Ray Whitney, LW
2013-14 Cap Hit: $4.5 million | Age: 42

Whitney and his family have moved to Arizona, where they'll call home for the foreseeable future, whether he plays in the NHL again or not. He won't re-sign with the Stars, but wants a chance to play again. There is a strong possibility that he re-joins the Coyotes, but a decision isn't likely to be made until closer to, or in, training camp.

Free Agent
Paul Bissonnette, LW
2013-14 Cap Hit: $737,500 | Age: 29

Yes, that's right. We have BizNasty in our Top 20 Best of the Rest list. He's a strong asset to have in the room, is willing to drop the gloves, and when given a chance to play, his numbers are pretty solid. He won't be back in Phoenix, but will find a new home somewhere.

Free Agent
Todd Bertuzzi, LW
2013-14 Cap Hit: $2.075 million | Age: 39

Bertuzzi's future is in limbo. He'd like to return for one more season, at least, but his game has been sliding of late. He could jump on board with a club closer to the start of training camp, if a team finds itself in need of some extra depth.

-- Free Agent
Ryan Malone, LW
2013-14 Cap Hit: $4.5 million | Age: 34

Malone, despite some personal trouble with the law, has attracted the interest of a few teams. He's likely to sign a one-year contract with a club in need of some depth, but that might not occur until closer to the start of training camps.
