Risky Picks
By Darryl Dobbs, TheFourthPeriod.com

Jeff O'Neill was not hurt on Saturday, the Maple Leafs just sat him in the press box. After starting the year with 22 points in 23 games, O'Neill has just eight points in his last 28 games.

The 29-year-old is having a miserable season coming off another miserable season – a bad sign for poolies that own him. If being a healthy scratch does not shake him out of his doldrums, then a coaching change will be the only thing that can help him. He is a 65-point player in disguise as a 30-point player. He will be a cheap pickup in most pools and although risky, is worth the low price. There should be lots of gas in the tank yet.

Another player has a low price tag, but for a different reason.

St. Louis Blue Vladimir Orszagh is not a cheap pickup because he is in a slump, but rather because he is under the radar. Playing the better part of the season in Sweden, Orszagh was signed by Phoenix and grabbed off waivers (which he had to go through to play in the NHL) by the Blues. After just a point in his first seven games, Orszagh has six points in four games. He had been a steady 35 point player during his tenure with Nashville, but on a team desperate for offense such as St. Louis, his potential is as high as 60 points. He is already spending time on a line with Keith Tkachuk and Petr Cajanek, and his spot is quite safe. After all, who else could St. Louis put on that line? They simply don’t have the depth at this time to make any changes.

Meanwhile...

...
O'Neill is not the only Leaf facing struggles. Matt Stajan is pointless in his last eight games, and has just three points in 21.

...
The Sedin twins are still flaming hot. Much hotter than the supposed number one line in Vancouver. Henrik and Daniel are a combined 13 points in their last three games.

...
Having another face-off man in town has done nothing to slow Yanic Perreault's offense. Despite the acquisition of Mike Sillinger, Perreault has five points in his last two games. He is currently playing on a line with Steve Sullivan, who was in on three of those five points.

...
A tale of two Niedermayers: Defenseman Scott has eight points in his last four games, while teammate and brother Rob is pointless in eight. Scott, however, is fighting a serious knee problem that will likely cause him to miss the Olympics.
