Thrashing the Net
By Darryl Dobbs, TheFourthPeriod.com
One thing that is learned quickly in hockey pools – every player will have
a hot streak.
Generally, these streaks go along with their
team's good fortunes. This could be the team playing so well that a player gets more points just by being a part of it. Or, the player could just be scoring big time, and carrying the team on his shoulders.
Right now, that team is the Atlanta Thrashers, and that player is Marc Savard.
The team has 19 goals in the last three games (and they only averaged three goals per game heading into the streak). Savard has one goal and nine assists to contribute to over
50-percent of the Thrasher offense.
All the hype is around Ilya Kovalchuk right now, and his six goals and two assists in those three games, is certainly nothing to sneeze at, but those fantasy owners that are in hockey pools that count goals and assists equally are definitely thrilled with Savard.
Likewise, Marian Hossa owners (six points), Peter Bondra owners (five points), and Slava Kozlov owners (five points) are also pleased.
With the Thrashers finding the net so easily of late, plus the fact that beginning on Wednesday they play eight games in
13 nights, it may be wise to grab a few of them in your rotisserie league.
Some Thrashers that are putting up the points that poolies may not be aware of: Jim Slater, a young power forward with some offensive upside, has four points in those three games, and Niclas Havelid, a defenseman good for around 30 points a season, has four points as well.
Meanwhile...
...Paul Mara of the Coyotes is having a good year, but has been held off the scoresheet for four games now.
...Nashville's Dan Hamhuis, another defenseman, has no points in six games. Coincidentally (not) Marek Zidlicky has been putting up points lately (four in two games) and has likely retaken his role as the top QB on the powerplay for the
Preds.
...Calgary has been winning games lately, and Jarome Iginla and Steven Reinprecht have been putting up big numbers. Their linemate can only benefit tremendously from the hot hands of these two (they have a combined 12 points in three games). The lucky winner of this
"linemate lottery" is Chuck Kobasew. Last game, the youngster picked up two points, and will continue to perform as long as he remains on the top line.
