The key to picking a
successful late-rounder
By Anthony Grossi
In most pools it is important to have depth. Some believe depth comes
from veterans, whereas others think it comes from up-and-coming stars
that could have a break out year.
It all depends on what your fantasy
team needs.
When I pick a team I always pay close attention to the young players
that others might pass by because they are not attractive in the
poolie bibles (hockey pool Magazines).
Remember: Just because a player
doesn't have great stats from the previous season doesn't mean they
will not achieve great numbers this year - it might be worth the risk.
Top 5 guys to look for in the late rounds
1. Blake Wheeler: Wheeler is showing some great potential and will
likely get 60 plus points this year, which is better than average for
a late rounder.
2. Matt Duchene: With Joe Sakic retired and the Avs looking to
rebuild, Duchene is the perfect player to fill that void. The only
thing going against him is that the youngest player to every play for
the Avs was Joe Sakic at the age of 19, but you know what they say:
records are meant to be broken.
3. Kyle Quincey: This rising star is going to shine in Denver. He had
something to prove when he left Detroit and found himself in
California playing top minutes for the Kings. Now he has a new home
with a team that is on the up and is looking for guys just like Kyle
to step in and help get them to the next level.
4. Victor Hedman: This 6-foot-6 giant is NHL ready and will be a large
presence on the ice for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Look for Hedman to
get 35-plus points in his first year. He will receive plenty of
playing time and will be in a close race for the Calder Trophy.
5. Cody Hodgson: This kid has a bright future ahead of him, even
though he won't be spending the season in Vancouver. If you are in a
keeper pool, then Hodgson is the perfect player to pick up in the
later rounds.
Winning a pool is like winning a championship; it doesn't matter if
you have the best players, it matters if you have depth.
