Managing the Cap
By Tab Bamford,

Rumors are flying about next year's salary cap going up, but you can manage the cap with your own roster this weekend at

This year, The Fourth Period is working with the fine folks at They're offering a free $500 NHL contest for Saturday games only this season that's remarkably easy to join.

This free contest will be salary-cap style drafting where everyone tries to assemble the best team out of the available players. You will have a $100,000 budget to build a team of 2 LWs, 2 RWs, 2 Centers, 2 Defensive players, 1 Goalie, and a FLEX. Each NHL player has been allocated a price based on their expected fantasy performance.

You can adjust your roster up until the contest starts on Saturday, December 7 at 2:00pm ET at which time your rosters will lock and the Live Scoreboard will be available.

Spend your money wisely and set up a championship roster this weekend. Here are our picks:

Flyers at Stars -- Jamie Benn
With 25 points (7G, 18A), Dallas' captain is making a significant push to make Canada's roster in Sochi.

Penguins at Bruins -- David Krejci
In a heavyweight bought between two of the Eastern Conference's best, there are plenty of options to choose from. While there are plenty of "usual suspects," the Bruins’ assist leader is our pick for a big night in this one.

Sabres at Canadiens -- P.K. Subban
Subban has 20 assists; the Sabres' top point producer, Cody Hodgson, has 17 points -- total. With Pittsburgh and Boston facing each other, this is a key opportunity for the Habs to impact the standings. Look for Subban to stay hot.

Maple Leafs at Senators -- Bobby Ryan
The Leafs' Phil Kessel is having a fine season, but Ryan is coming off a 15-point November. His size could present problems for the banged-up Leafs.

Panthers at Red Wings -- Brian Campbell
The Wings are missing most of their household names right now, which opens for the door -- and the ice -- for a smooth skater like Campbell to maneuver. Campbell leads the Panthers with 11 assists, and could have a productive night in Detroit.

Jets at Lightning -- Martin St. Louis
"Little" describes the leading point man on both teams -- Bryan Little leads the Jets with 27 points and 12 goals, but we’re going with the BIG little man in this game, St. Louis.

Predators at Capitals -- Alexander Ovechkin
With Shea Weber hurting, look for Ovechkin to take advantage of a young Preds blueline.

Devils at Rangers -- Jaromir Jagr
The former Ranger comes in leading the Devils in points, goals and assists. He's enjoying a fantastic renaissance this year and has always enjoyed the big stage.

Ducks at Blues -- T.J. Oshie
The Ducks are playing in Chicago on Friday night, and will have to deal with the physical Blues with a flight in between. Oshie has 20 assists and could set up a few teammates against Anaheim.

Flames at Oilers -- Taylor Hall
The Oilers are finding their offensive groove this week, and Hall has been a big part of it. Calgary is ahead of Edmonton in the standings, which the home team will certainly be looking to rectify.

Islanders at Kings -- Anze Kopitar
John Tavares is having a magnificent season, but the Islanders' defense has been bad all year. In Los Angeles, the Kings could have a big night at the expense of Tavares' struggling teammates.
